Friends of John Fawkner College organised an event to discuss how to build community support and call for more resources and support for their local public schools on February 12.
Australian Education Union attendee Darly Croke said the college is underfunded by $1.2 million and said the government needs to properly resource the school.
He asked the community to support the teachers and support staff in their upcoming enterprise bargaining agreement. “Better funded teachers and support staff provide better outcomes for students.”
The college is a good school with good teachers but the crowd was enthusiastic in their demand for a great school with great teachers, which would come with strong community support.
Socialist Alliance Merri-bek City Councillor Sue Bolton, an invited speaker, congratulated those present for their commitment to the college and making it the school it is today.
Bolton also said the college would also thrive if the local primary schools were boosted to be feeder schools to it leading, ultimately, to a stronger Fawkner community. She said politicians need to support the committed parent, teacher and community cohort at the college which serves Fawkner, most of Campbellfield and parts of Glenroy, Coburg North and Reservoir.
