Video: Emergency protest against Turkish bombing raids on Rojava and northern Iraq

November 21, 2022

Sydney's Kurdish community and their supporters held a snap protest on November 20 against Turkish air attacks against towns and villages in north-east Syria and northern Iraq/South Kurdistan.

In the early hours of November 20, Turkish warplanes began bombing hospitals, schools and other civilian targets in and around Kobanê.

This included the village of Belûniyê in Shahba, southwest of Kobanê, now populated by displaced Kurds from Afrin, as well as the village of Teqil Beqil near Qerecox in Dêrik in the eastern part of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria/Rojava.

Turkish warplanes also targeted the wheat depot in the region of Dahir al-Arab near Zirgan and areas in the Qendil mountains and Asos mountains in South Kurdistan.

Turkish warplanes returned to bomb Kobanê later in the day. Local communities fear that a ground invasion may be imminent.

Baran Sogut, from the Sydney Kurdish Youth Association, told the protest that the Turkish government had staged a terrorist bombing in Istanbul as a pretext for a new invasion of Kurdish-liberated areas in north and east Syria and in northern Iraq.

He called on the global coalition against ISIS/Daesh to take strong political, legal, diplomatic and economic action "to force Turkey to comply with international law".
