Why

The housing crisis is the worst in living memory. It is a humanitarian disaster. At least 750,000 people live in housing stress and are in desperate need of secure housing.

We are taking action on housing because federal and state governments are set to make the situation worse. In Victoria former Premier Daniel Andrews declared the demolition of 44 public housing towers. This plan will displace over 10,000 families.

In NSW the Labor government of Chris Minns has reneged on its anti-privatisation election promise and is trying to demolish public housing estates at Waterloo South, South Eveleigh and 82 Wentworth Road, Glebe. It has demolished the Arncliff public housing estate while Telopea’s ‘Three Sister’ towers lie empty. Destroying perfectly good homes in a housing crisis is a travesty.

Strong negotiating with the federal government over its Housing Australia plan has delivered extra money for social homes. But social housing is not public housing—and we need housing now, not in five years.

Over thirty years, large quantities of public housing have been handed over to ‘social’ or ‘community’ housing, with privatisation of publicly-owned homes and land. This must stop! We need funding for public housing.

Take action for housing justice on Tuesday December 12 in Wagga Wagga. Defend and Extend Public Housing, and Freeze Rents.
