The Human Rights Law Centre’s forum, Understanding the Rise of the Far Right in Australia, drew activists and advocates to the Wheeler Centre on July 15.

Journalist Cam Wilson, co-author of Conspiracy Nation: Exposing the dangerous world of Australian conspiracy theories, explored how far-right movements expanded during the COVID-9 pandemic.

Human rights lawyer Sanmati Verma traced the evolution of One Nation’s politics from economic grievances. She argued the left must communicate how socialist policies can provide real economic solutions for working people.

Tarneen Onus-Browne, Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Bindal and Meriam person spoke, as did trade unionist and author Oscar Kaspi-Crutchett.

Discussion centred on how to build a union movement capable of uniting workers across communities which can offer a convincing alternative to One Nation’s hate and division.
