In 2014 the Australian government implemented a ban on resettlement of refugees from Indonesia.
The Albanese Labor government maintains the ban today. Indonesia is the major regional gateway for people to come to Australia from other countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Sudan.
Those who signed up with UNHCR from resettlement, have been banned by Australia since 1 July 2014.
These refugees signed up to enter Australia via the ‘official’ route, but now Australia forbids them to do this.
Meanwhile, Indonesia officially does not acknowledge the existence of these refugees, because the country did not sign up to the refugee convention. This means that approximately 14,000 men, women and children remain in limbo there, living in poverty with no work rights.
