    Thousands of refugees who are on temporary visas can expect to wait for many more months for the permanent visas that Labor has announced. Labor promised change but it continues to drag out the misery, even refusing to carry out its own election pledges. So we need to be out on the streets again, refugees, asylum-seekers and supporters, to demand the cruelty stops and permanent protection now for all.

    There are still 77 refugees left behind in Papua New Guinea who were detained for years on Manus Island. They are now housed in Port Moresby where they live in fear of robbery and attack, some of them now seriously sick. The Australian government has tried to pretend they are now PNG’s responsibility, but this is a thin excuse.

Indonesia is the major regional gateway for people to come to Australia from other countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Sudan.These refugees signed up to enter Australia via the ‘official’ route, but now Australia forbids them to do this.
