Activists protest Afghanistan occupation

Issue

MELBOURNE — On February 16 a group of peace activists held a vigil outside the Melbourne office of federal finance minister Lindsay Tanner. The protest was the first in a series of monthly vigils aimed at drawing attention to the worsening situation in Afghanistan and to call for the Australian government to bring the troops home.

Vigil participants held up a banner that read, "End the Afghanistan War" and handed out flyers explaining why foreign troops should be withdrawn from the country.

Another vigil has been planned for March at Defence Plaza, 661 Bourke St. The group will hand out stickers and flyers and publicise the Palm Sunday peace march.

The Palm Sunday march will be themed "Afghanistan: Build not Bomb" and will be held on March 28, from 1pm at the State Library.
