The Australia-Cuba Friendship Society marked the 73rd anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Barracks – a key episode in the Cuban Revolution – with a Poetry in Motion event on July 26.
The event also promoted the fifth annual “From Australia to Cuba with Love” campaign which aims to raise funds for aid projects in Cuba.
This year, the funds will provide a solar system for a Community Home for children without parents, in Guantanamo Province. The system will increase energy security for the home, which has become a critical issue across the island due to further sanctions imposed by the US administration, preventing oil from reaching Cuba.
Performers presented poems and music celebrating the Cuban revolution and ongoing acts of solidarity. Lachlan Hurse from ACFS spoke about the context of the Moncada attack and Sue Monk spoke about “From Australia to Cuba with Love”.
