‘Unruly’ exhibition celebrates the right to dissent

Unruly WA, from June 2-4, brings together artists, photographers and other storytellers.

Unruly WA, a multi-media exhibition, at the Kidogo Arthouse in Walyalup from June 2-4, brings together artists, photographers and other storytellers to “celebrate political dissent while it is still legal”.

Organisers of a three-day program, hosted by Right to Protest WA and Stop AUKUS WA, say it aims to foster closer links between activists when state repression of peaceful protesters is growing.

In addition to being able to view the exhibition’s plethora of images and videos, the public can also attend a seminar, “Unruly Voices” on June 3.

A panel of community organisers will reflect on the role that activism and protest play in the construction of a just world. The current anti-protest bills before the WA parliament will be scrutinised.

The seminar will be MCed by Anna Copeland, Director of Clinical Legal Programs at Murdoch University, with speakers including protest culture academic Dr Marziya Mohammadali, peace activist Jo Vallentine, Greens’ Senator Sophie McNeill and First Nations community organiser Tanesha Bennell.

The exhibition will end with a celebration of music as an important component of protest: some of WA’s favourite local musos providing an evening of entertainment on June 4.

Launching Unruly WA will be a soundscape by Measures of Distance, kicking off the exhibition on the evening of June 2, from 6.30pm.
