The Civil Liberties Defence Centre (CDLC) was launched at a packed-out and star-studded event in Lidcombe on May 7.

The not-for-profit defence centre aims to protect civil liberties from the unprecedented attacks on free speech and dissent.  It has conducted legal clinics for those attacked by NSW Police at the February 9 protest against the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Sydney lawyer Nick Hanna (who is also a film-maker and YouTuber) has been the driving force behind the CDLC. He was also involved in the successful constitutional challenge Premier of NSW Chris Minn’s anti-protest laws.

Hanna said his aim was to set up a legal hotline. This is much needed when the police take action unexpectedly. He emphasised that the legal costs of supporting and representing activists would be much less than they are now, as activists are forced to raise money individually.

The costs for the CDLC, which would represent activist clients pro bono, would be much less because it will be dedicated to civil liberties cases and representing clients collectively.

CDLC’s mission statement sets out that it was formed to promote and protect freedom of expression and other civil rights across Australia.

Special guests and speakers at the evening were Dr Mohammed Mustafa, Mary Kostakidis, Nazeem Hussain, Amani Haydar, Dr Nick Riemer, Dr Lana Turner. Elizabeth Jarrett was unable to attend and sent her apologies.

The event was packed, with hundreds joining the launch. Tickets were $130 and as it was a fundraiser, there was also a raffle and an auction of artworks.
