A new international campaign to free jailed Kurdish liberation movement leader Abdullah Ocalan was launched on September 23.

The campaign launch included the Reverend Bill Crews, Greens MPs David Shoebridge and Jamie Parker, and Jim McIlroy from the Socialist Alliance.

“Ocalan is a powerful symbol of the Kurdish people’s desire for peace, just as Nelson Mandela was the symbol of peace and freedom for the people of South Africa,” said Kurdish community spokesperson Gule Rose.

“His release from jail would be a major step towards bringing peace to the Middle East.”
