Socialist Alliance in Victoria has announced candidates for the Legislative Council in the Western Victoria Region at the November 28 elections.
The party is running on the campaign theme of “Fighting for people, not the billionaires”.
Tim Gooden, Sue Bull and Ross Smith are active trade unionists from the construction and maritime industries, and think progressive working class people need to be heard.
Gooden, a former Secretary of Geelong Trades Hall and a Palestine justice campaigner, told Green Left: “We are putting forward positive solutions for workers rather than the hate which is being put out by the big end of town. Blaming migrants and refugees for cost-of-living rises is about scapegoating people who have nothing. Meanwhile, the billionaires rake in profits.”
Bull, a teacher trainer in schools and the construction industry for many years told GL: “State and federal governments can always find money to subsidise their big business mates, but when it comes to funding housing, health or education, the coffers are bare. We need to build a movement that fights for us and our needs.”
Smith, a maritime industry stalwart, said the ongoing industry closures in the region has led to hidden poverty and intense anger. “Lots of money is going towards the war machine. Why can’t we have good long-term jobs in renewable industries or manufacturing industries that create rather than destroy?”
Socialist Alliance in Geelong is also running candidates in all the electorates in the district.
