As part of Homelessness Week 2025 (4–10 August), Anti-Poverty Network SA is hosting a community action to highlight the scale of the housing crisis and demand immediate government action. This year’s theme, “Homelessness Action Now”, calls on all levels of government to take urgent, bold steps to end homelessness and ensure safe, affordable housing for all.

We are holding this event outside the office of Nick Champion MP, South Australian Minister for Housing and Urban Development, to draw attention to his critical role in delivering real housing solutions — particularly a massive expansion of public housing in SA.

We will call on Minister Nick Champion to commit to building thousands of new public homes, and to take urgent, systemic action to end homelessness.

Our Key Housing Demands

APNSA is calling on Nick Champion and the Malinauskas Government to:

  • Build thousands of public homes, not just hundreds — starting immediately.
  • Introduce rent controls and a 2-year rent freeze to halt skyrocketing rents.
  • End tax concessions for property investors and redirect funds into housing.
  • Implement a vacancy tax on the 86,000 empty homes in SA.
  • Ensure all rental homes are healthy, liveable, and energy-efficient.
  • Bring back the eviction moratorium and strengthen protections for renters.
  • Regulate short-term rentals to prioritise long-term housing needs.

The Crisis in Numbers

  • Over 7,000 South Australians are homeless.
  • More than 15,000 people are on the public housing waitlist — including 3,000 in urgent need.
  • Rents have increased 20%+ over 2 years, pushing people deeper into poverty.
  • Only 1% of rentals are affordable for those on JobSeeker.
  • 86,000 private homes are sitting empty while thousands go without shelter.
  • SA has a shortfall of 32,000 public homes — and growing.
