About 1000 people attended the Stop the Chop rally on June 6 in the Adelaide Parklands, demanding Premier Peter Malinauskus and his Labor government stop destroying the city’s trees and parks.

The protesters condemned Labor’s recent destruction of 500 plus trees at Pirltawardli Park — a site of cultural significance for the Kaurna community — to make way for a golf course. They also demanded an immediate halt to the construction of the MotoGP race circuit, which will destroy more parkland and trees.

Speakers highlighted the importance of green space for communities and wildlife. They criticised the government’s rush to put through a new law, in June last year, to allow new developments to receive less scrutiny.

Kaurna, Arabunna and Narungga Traditional Owner Janette Millera and local resident Edwin Kemp Attrill told the protest about their action to sue the Department of Premier and Cabinet in the Federal Court over the controversial North Adelaide golf course development.

Following the speeches, the protesters marched through the park and wrapped yellow ribbons around trees.
