Why
Ten years after the death of Josh Park-Fing while participating in a Work for the Dole placement, the Australian Unemployed Workers Union is inviting the community (in person and online) to a forum about Work for the Dole, compulsory "volunteer" work, and your rights.
While Work for the Dole and mutual obligation programs are promoted as pathways to employment, the evidence tells a different story. Many people are undertaking activities including unpaid work under threat of having their payments suspended, despite these programs doing little to improve employment outcomes.
If unemployed people are required to perform unpaid work to prove their deservingness, attention is diverted from the real issues, like creating secure jobs, investing in communities, and building an economy that works for everyone.
At this forum we'll discuss:
- The history of Work for the Dole and mutual obligations;
- Your rights and protections if you're required to participate;
- The rise of compulsory unpaid "volunteer" work;
- The impact of unpaid labour on wages and secure jobs;
- Why AUWU and other unions are campaigning for a Job Guarantee and how you can get involved.
