About Waddananggu
On 26th August 2021, we the Wangan and Jagalingou Cultural Custodians lit a sacred fire in a ceremonial bora ring on their homelands; right next to Adani’s carmichael coal mine. “Waddananggu” - the ‘talking’ ceremony was born.
For more than four years, we have kept the sacred fire burning - through blistering hot days and flooding rains. We have set an historic precedent and asserted our legal rights to practice culture on our country under the Qld Human Rights Act. Neither the police nor Adani can remove us.
Our family has opposed Adani's carmichael coal mine for over 14 years. Adrian Burragubba has been through five federal court cases, been bankrupted by Adani, and is now running new legal actions to save The Sacred Doongmabulla Springs, while we are maintaining the ceremony across the road from the coal mine.
Meanwhile, our worst fears have come true, and the mine has started poisoning and drying up the springs.
We can’t let that happen and we must be allowed to fulfill our cultural obligations of maintaining and protecting the springs unhindered.
Waddananggu is setting precedents in many ways, especially by exercising human rights to practice culture on Country.
Half a decade of Waddananggu means a lot to our family and the world, and with the help of our loyal supporters, we continue the legal actions and ceremony.
