Unions call
for nuclear test ban

On November 27, the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM) called for a total ban on nuclear tests and the elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide. The ICEM represents more than 20 million workers worldwide, including those in the nuclear energy industry. It pointed out that, France and China continue to conduct nuclear tests, and some other nations will have the potential. This is both indefensible and intolerable. The ICEM statement is drawn from a resolution adopted unanimously in Washington last week by delegates to the last Congress of the chemical, energy and allied workers' international ICEF. The ICEF has now merged with the miners' MIF to form the ICEM. n
