Hundreds of unionists and gender and queer activists marched on March 8 for International Women’s Day, organised by We Are Union — Women.

A large contingent from the Iranian community joined in, bringing attention to the women-led movement there against patriarchy and repression.

Union contingents from the Australian Education Union, United Workers Union, Rail, Tram and Bus Union and Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union were prominent.

One of the themes was “No more cupcakes and morning teas: we need to smash the patriarchy”.

Speakers highlighted the various struggles women face across the world and in the workplace.
