Green Left TV filmmaker wins prize for refugee doco

Zebedee Parkes.

Activist filmmaker Zebedee Parkes, a member of Socialist Alliance who produces content for Green Left TV, won “best short documentary” at the 2016 Sydney Indie Film Festival for his refugee documentary For My Friend In Detention.

The film explores the impact of refugee activism in Australia on both refugees and activists. It draws on the true story of Perth-based refugee rights activist Sarah and her relationship with Cali, a Tamil refugee who was jailed in Curtin detention centre. As well as being accepted in several festivals around the world, the film has been screened around Australia by activist groups.

Also winning “best feature documentary” at the festival, held in October, was Punks for West Papua, which details the campaign by Australian punk musicians in support of West Papua’s struggle for freedom from Indonesian occupation.
