Climate activists appeared at the Newcastle Court on January 13, charged with blockading the world’s largest coal port during the Rising Tide “protestival” in November last year.

The 129 people were charged under the Crimes Act and Marine Safety Act. These anti-protest laws carry a maximum penalty of a $22,000 fine or two years behind bars. The cases were adjourned.

In total, 141 people are facing charges for their climate activism.
