Pauline Hanson’s One Nation continues to ride high in the polls, with the latest Roy Morgan poll showing it would win 24% of the vote if an election was held today, just 3.5% behind Labor and 0.5% ahead of the Liberal National Coalition.
One Nation’s popularity has been built on the back of falling living standards, as wages have not kept up with the rising cost of living after decades of neoliberalism.
Hanson has channeled this anger into racist scapegoating of migrants, using her renewed platform to spew division and hate.
Backed by Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart, Hanson has a record of opposing better wages and conditions for workers and wants to make it easier for bosses to sack people.
She has called for a return to the White Australia Policy, claimed domestic violence is a “two-way street” and wants to roll back abortion rights.
That’s why students across the country are walking out of classes and joining protests to “Say no to Hanson” on August 13. Contingents from most universities and some high schools will be joining the nationwide day of action.
