Why
What started as conversations with newly arrived refugee families, mostly women rebuilding their lives far from home~has now grown into Refugee Cultural Day.
In 2024, we hosted the first market centred (on the Lands of the Gadigal people) around Palestinian-led small businesses, with many stallholders newly arrived from Gaza. It was the first event of its kind on the lands of the Gadigal people, and it sparked something powerful within the community. What began as a small act of solidarity grew into a space of connection, support and community.
Refugee communities bring creativity, strength, culture and knowledge, yet barriers such as market fees, promotion and access to spaces can make it difficult for small businesses to grow and be seen.
That is why this year, for World Refugee Day, we knew we had to do something bigger.
Refugee Cultural Day is about bringing communities together through food, music, art, dance and storytelling while creating space for refugee-led businesses, artists, services and communities to share their cultures, skills and work.
We hope you can join us in supporting and amplifying these incredible small businesses, artists and communities.
