Why

The Black Rose Scholarship is an initiative by Aprila Wayar’s friends to secure three years of secondary education, safe living arrangements and legal aid for her orphaned daughters.

Aprila was the first female West Papuan novelist, and an influential figure in Papuan journalism and activism. She is best known for her stories about West Papuan history, human rights and women’s experiences, as well as for being a mentor to many emerging storytellers in the Papuan diaspora.

We invite you to join us for dinner, a discussion on Rootless Black Rose, and a healing yarn co-hosted by Indonesian, First Nations, Pasifika, Asian and West Papuan allies.

Book your dinner tickets now and pledge donations to our scholarship by following our Linktree in the Bio! See you on Wednesday 24 June, 05:30 AEST at T.O.M.S Place

We will also be selling digital books of “Rootless Black Rose” / “Mawar Hitam Tanpa Akar” in English and Indonesian, all proceeds to fund JC and DC’s education. Stay tuned to order your copy!

To learn more about Aprila’s story, do check out our previous posts on our timeline”, including the biography “Aprila Wayar: Beyond Her Writings” by @gipawarijo, the flash memoir “Aprila & Me: Our Posthumous Collab” by @grace.tanjo, as well as @laniyuk ’s reel about her friendship with Aprila at @westpapuasolidaritygarramilla

We would like to thank the partners that have made this event possible: @melbournebergerak, @artsforwomen6, @congeesocialclub @menumbook @gipawarijo @beckind @laniyuk @grace.tanjo as well as our fabulous volunteers and silent supporters.
