Community Rally: Hume Residents Stand with our council workers

Council workers take strike action

When

Where

Hume Learning Centre
1102 Pascoe Vale Rd
Broadmeadows VIC 3047
Australia

Why

Australian Services Union (ASU) members at Hume council are taking industrial action alongside council workers from across Victoria to win a fair pay deal that keeps up with inflation. Join other Hume residents to show your support and send a message to Hume council management that residents support the workers.

For more info on union members demands, see: https://www.asuvictas.com.au/.../Council_workers_deserve...

FAIR PAY – union members are pushing for a pay deal that keeps up with inflation. Hume is a working class area and we support workers in all industries including council workers pushing for pay increases that keep up with the cost of living.

NO SCABS – tell Hume council that bringing in external strike breaker garbage collector contractors to undermine strike action is unacceptable.

Having rubbish uncollected is inconvenient for residents and going on strike is uncomfortable for workers. Workers only take that course of action if they really need to.

The aim of the garbage collection strike is to remind council just how important and indispensable the work of union members is. The strike is not aimed at residents. Your support as a resident means a lot to union members fighting for their rights, which unfortunately does involve causing some temporary inconvenience to residents.

The industrial actions around bin collection and other stoppages across the council workforce is currently paused, leading up to a big strike and Rally happening in the city on May 5. Industrial action may resume if Hume council continues to drag their feet on signing up to the union agreement – the best way to end disruption to waste collection and other council services is for council to agree to what union members are asking for.

Speakers will include: ASU Vic/Tas Secretary Tash Wark, Hume Councillor John Haddad, Merri Bek Councillor Sue Bolton, Victorian Socialists candidate and Professionals Australia member Mutullah Can Yolbulan, and other local residents.

Rally Endorsed by: Australian Services Union Vic-Tas Branch, Victorian Socialists, Socialist Alliance, Defend the Unions Defend the CFMEU
