🕊️ A memorial for David Dungay Jnr will be held at Kempsey Jail at 10AM, before the rally begins at 12PM at Kempsey police station — all are welcome to attend, pay respects, and stand in solidarity with his family and community.
This December 29th, we gather in Kempsey to demand justice, truth, and accountability — 10 years on from the murder of Dunghutti man David Dungay Jnr.
David died inside Long Bay Jail after being restrained by multiple officers and injected with a sedative while crying out:
“I can’t breathe.”
His death — captured on camera — became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement in Australia, when thousands took to the streets in 2020. David’s story reflected the same injustice that took George Floyd’s life in the U.S., and it reminded the world that racism and police violence are not just overseas issues — they’re happening right here, on our own Country.
Since the 1991 Royal Commission, more than 612 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody, and still not one police officer has been convicted - with more then 16 happening within our own community of Kempsey over a number of years.
We are demanding:
- Justice and accountability now
- Stop all deaths in custody
- A new corruption inquiry into Aboriginal deaths in custody
We invite and stand with all families who have lost loved ones in custody.
