Why
Australia is in the midst of the worst housing crisis in generations. Renters and many owner-occupiers are suffering the effects of a housing market rigged in favour of developers and landlords. Rents in Sydney have risen at the fastest rate in decades, and rising interest rates are hurting mortgage holders. Meanwhile, both the NSW and federal governments have chosen to double down on the status quo.
On Saturday 9 September, the National Union of Students’ Get A Room campaign, in collaboration with the NSW Greens’ housing and homelessness spokesperson Jenny Leong, are calling on supporters to join a Sydney-wide demonstration to Fix The Housing Crisis ahead of the upcoming NSW state budget.
We invite anyone and everyone who is angry about the housing crisis to join us at Town Hall at 1pm Saturday 9 August, to demand that the NSW and federal governments take action to:
- Rent freeze now
- Build public housing
- Raise rent assist
- Tax property developers
- Strengthen renters’ rights
- End for-profit student accommodation
- Implement a corporate super-profits tax

For updates check the Facebook event. There is also a rally in Byron Bay, Saturday 3pm.
