Why

19 July marks the 10th anniversary of the announcement by then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, that “any asylum-seeker who arrives in Australia by boat will ... have no prospect of being resettled in Australia...and will never permanently live in Australia.”

Since this policy of indefinite exile to Manus Island and Nauru was announced, at least 14 people subject to this policy have died either offshore or after being evacuated to Australia for medical attention.

Around 1200 refugees spent time in offshore detention and are now living in limbo in Australia without a clear pathway to permanency. There are also some who are still trapped in PNG or Nauru.

Reports, testimonies, artwork and literature have well documented the human rights violations, violence and abuse that this policy has engendered.

Join us for a creative protest action marking what the past decade of this policy has represented and to call on the government to:

  • end immigration detention
  • end offshore ‘processing’
  • provide permanent safety for all now
  • stop turnbacks of people seeking asylum
