It's the heady days of the 70s, Berlinguer is the Secretary of the largest Communist party in the world at the time, the Italian Communist Party / PCI with over a million card holding members and some 12 million voters. Following the coup in Chile in September 1973 which overthrew Allende, the charismatic Berlinguer sets out to avoid Allende's fate, by reconciling socialism and democracy in a historical political accommodation between Christian Democracy (DC) and the Italian Communist Party (PCI) - the Historic Compromise.
The film goes from 1973, when he escaped an assassination attempt in Sofia by the Bulgarian secret service, through electoral campaigns and trips to Moscow, the front pages of newspapers around the world and risky relationships with those in power, up to the assassination in 1978 of the president of the Christian Democrat Aldo Moro. It's the story of a man and a people for whom life and politics, private and collective, were inextricably linked.
