Why
To mark World Refugee Week, we invite our supporters to join in on the weekly 'Home Affairs: Release Refugees from Australian Detention Now' vigil.
These weekly vigils have been initiated in solidarity with refugees and people seeking asylum who have been unjustly imprisoned for more than 8 years as well as refugees and asylum seekers living in limbo in the community.
There are approximately 30,000 refugees living in our community on temporary visas. Not only are their lives in limbo they live with the constant fear of their visas being revoked and being deported.
COVID-19 has shown us how important government support is for everyone living in precarious situations. However in the case of people seeking asylum, government policies have consistently been designed to marginalise and exclude people from accessing the basic necessities of life, of which safety and security are key. All refugees and people seeking asylum should be offered a secure pathway to citizenship.
We acknowledge that this gathering will take place on the land of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation and pay our respects to Elders past and present. Sovereignty was never ceded, this always was and always will be Noongar land.
