In early March, an Israeli military paramedic was arrested and sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for distributing sweets and fruit to Palestinian detainees in the prison he worked in. Reportedly a reservist drafted into the army, the paramedic had been reprimanded several times for his friendliness with Palestinian detainees, including an incident where he smoked a cigarette with a detainee and hugged him to celebrate his release from the prison. A spokesperson for the military said, "the medic violated a clear order which forbade any unofficial relations with the detainees."
