Picnic for peace

GEELONG — One hundred people attended a January 18 "picnic for peace" on the Geelong waterfront, initiated by the Geelong Greens.

Federal ALP member for Geelong, Gavin O'Connor spoke out against a war on Iraq outlining the impact a war with Iraq would have on Australian business interests, particularly wheat sales.

Socialist Alliance member Tim Gooden stressed the urgency of opposition to the war, calling for people to join actions on the international weekend of action scheduled for February 15-16.

He also invited people to attend the Geelong anti-war coalition meetings to discuss protest action against the International Air Show, held February 11-16 at Avalon, just outside of Geelong. It will showcase the US military hardware that has been used against Iraq in the 1991 Gulf war and will be used again if the impending war on Iraq is not stopped.
