Residents and activists from the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy will be protesting against the developer threatening to instigate a new development on the land known as the “The Block”.
The protest will take place on Saturday, March 21, starting at 11am at the Tent Embassy opposite the Redfern Community Centre.
Developer DeiCorp recently advertised its Redfern developments by saying: “The Aboriginals have already moved out, now Redfern is the last virgin suburb close to city.”
The march will go ahead despite organisers facing issues with the NSW police force who previously told organisers they “do not want a black enclave on the Block again”.
President of the Indigenous Social Justice Association Ray Jackson said: “It is more evident yet again that the police force are trying to stop our involvement in rallying or marching to places where the public are present.”
However, after talks with police, they have told event organisers that they are willing to let the march go ahead provided that they agreed to a series of conditions.
Jackson said people “will peacefully gather to publicly put our very strong belief that the 'colours of Redfern' includes black, and ever it will.”
