Why

We are calling for a National Week of Action in response to the death of a 24-year-old disabled Aboriginal man from the Yuendumu community—who lost his life after being restrained by NT Police in a Coles supermarket in Alice Springs.

This tragic and avoidable death occurred during National Reconciliation Week, on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death—a time meant to reflect on justice, truth-telling, and the value of Black and First Nations lives. Yet here we are, mourning another life lost at the hands of police.

It has since been revealed that one of the officers involved was a police liaison sergeant, not on active duty at the time, and previously the subject of complaints for excessive force against Indigenous people.

This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a broader, entrenched system of violence, neglect, and institutional racism. It demands more than words—it demands action.

We are calling on communities across the country to take part in a National Week of Action. Organize vigils, speak-outs, marches, community forums, and cultural resistance events in your area. Stand in solidarity with Yuendumu. Stand up against police violence. Stand up for justice.

Let this be a week where we remember those we’ve lost, raise our voices, and demand change—loudly, unapologetically, and together.

We call on all community organisations to work with the guidance of First Nations leaders and elders to take up space and take action. Whether you’re in the city or a remote community—your voice matters. Your grief matters. Your resistance matters.

Decolonise. Organise. Mobilise.

Justice for Yuendumu. Justice for all.
