Resistance in action

ANU union elections

@box text intr = CANBERRA — The September 3-6 Students Association elections at the Australian National University were won by the ticket associated with the incumbent officials. The left-Labor controlled Education Action ticket also won some positions.

Resistance decided not to run with Education Action, because the ALP students involved refused to allow democratic control of campaign material.

Instead, Resistance members used the opportunity to build support for anti-corporate and pro-refugee campaigns, as well as free education for all.

subh = Genoa protests come to town

@box text intr = BRISBANE — Twenty-five activists from Brisbane and the Gold Coast gathered at the Resistance Centre for an activist training day on September 8. James Vassilopoulos recounted his experience at the protests outside the Genoa meeting of the G8 in late July. Stirring tales and footage of mass marches, forums and direct actions (with a particular focus on the brutal violence of the carabinieri) provoked intense discussion. Participants were enthusiastic about organising a militant anti-corporate contingent for the October 6 march on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Refugee forum

@box text intr = GEELONG — Resistance activists at Deakin University organised a forum on the Tampa refugee crisis on September 12. After a vibrant discussion around the Howard government's racist attack on asylum seekers, the meeting organised pro-refugee stalls to take place on campus.
