Rally in the Valley

By Chris Dawson

BRISBANE — The second in a series of anti-racism community rallies organised by the Democratic Socialists and Resistance took place in the Chinatown mall, Fortitude Valley, on September 5.

With the slogans "Migrants are welcome!" and "Support native title!", about 150 people gathered to hear speakers, including prominent anti-racism activist Richard Seto, Democratic Socialist candidate for Brisbane Graham Matthews, John Frame from radio 4ZZZ, and Latin America solidarity activist Manoli Orellana.

John Tomlinson recited poetry and Aboriginal activist Dennis Bobongie spoke of the demoralising effects of institutionalised racism on Murri people.

The lively march that followed, the first of its kind in the local area, ended at a fiesta in the Resistance Centre in New Farm where musicians entertained the crowd, interspersed by further speakers.
