New centre for Resistance in Melbourne

By Arun Pradhan

MELBOURNE — After more than a decade of housing left activism in Melbourne, the Anthony Street Resistance Centre has closed its doors permanently. A new Resistance Centre has opened, on the fifth floor of Druids House, 407 Swanston Street, in the city.

The Anthony Street centre went out in style: 120 people attended an East Timor solidarity dinner there on November 6. Keynote speaker Max Lane, from Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor, described his recent trip to East Timor and the new phase of struggle there.

Other speakers included Maurice Sibelle from the Democratic Socialist Party, who talked about the spirit and history of the Resistance Centre.

Activists expect that the location of the new centre — opposite RMIT, and close to Melbourne University and the city centre — will enable more people to drop in and make use of one of the best radical bookshops in Melbourne. The centre's new phone number is 9639 8622.
