Nestle targeted for GE food

By Daniel Jardine

SYDNEY — Protesters outside the offices of food giant Nestle have demanded that the company declare that its products sold in Australia have not been genetically engineered.

The March 15 protest, attended by 20 people, was organised by the Genetic Engineering Action Group, which campaigns against the use of genetic engineering in our food supply. The group insists that Australian consumers should be able to choose whether they eat GE foods. It also insists that the federal government restart the process of labelling GE foods.

Spokesperson Ieva Gay said that Nestle has declared its products GE-free in Austria, Germany and Britain, so there was no conceivable reason why it could not do the same in Australia. A company representative accepted a letter from the protesters.
