Environment seminar planned

By David Lasscock

ADELAIDE — The Better Environment for West Torrens (BEWT) group is celebrating its third birthday with a major seminar, "Inventing the future — Tandanya Bioregion".

BEWT operates principally in the West Torrens council area, but anyone is welcome at the seminar.

The focus will be on developing strategies which promote direct community action. It will not merely be a talkfest.

Among the eight workshops, one is entitled "Young People and the Environment; Education and Empowerment". This will be facilitated by members of Environmental Youth Alliance.

Another called "Ecocity; Principles to transform and redevelop suburbia" will be facilitated by a member of the Urban Ecology Group.

BEWT has had a great deal of success in its few years. Four current councillors are paid-up members. BEWT has also been involved in establishing the Alliance of North West Environment Groups. More recently it has helped establish the North West Community Environment Centre at Port Adelaide.

The seminar will be held at the Reedbeds Community Centre, Fitch Rd, Fulham, on Sunday, July 11, from 9.30 to 4.00. Cost is $10/5 in advance or $14/8 at the door, which includes published proceedings.
