Mariana Riscali, from Brazil’s largest radical left party, the Socialist and Freedom Party (PSOL), has been confirmed to speak at Ecosocialism 2024.
This means this year’s conference, in Boorloo/Perth over June 28–30, will involve left-wing activists from every inhabited continent in the world.
Riscali is a PSOL national executive member and executive director of its research and education centre, the Lauro Campos and Marielle Franco Foundation.
She is also a leader of the Socialist Left Movement (MES), a revolutionary tendency within PSOL.
Riscali will speak on the feature panel “Understanding the rise of the global far right”, where she will discuss the ongoing challenges posed by the movement around former far-right Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
Riscali’s participation from South America means Ecosocialism 2024 will hear from socialist activists from six continents.
The biggest contingent of speakers is from Asia given its close proximity to Boorloo/Perth. They include: Aaron Pedrosa (Party of the Labouring Masses, the Philippines), Ammar Ali Jan (People’s Rights Party, Pakistan), Clifton D'Rozario (Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation), Danaletchumi Langaswaran (Socialist Party of Malaysia), Leila Khaled (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) and Rebecca Meckelburg (independent research scholar based in Indonesia).
Speaking alongside them are South African human rights advocate Salim Vally (Africa), Irish ecosocialist Jess Spear (Europe) and United States climate activist Tabitha Spence (North America).
There will also be numerous speakers from Australia, including First Nations leader Megan Krakouer, Naarm/Melbourne-based Palestinian activist Nasser Mashni and Zack Schofield from Rising Tide.
Other local speakers include Green Left editorial members Susan Price and Isaac Nellist, Socialist Alliance national co-convenor Sam Wainwright, Nova Sobieralski and Jasmine Noel from Queer Liberation Boorloo and Disrupt Burrup Hub activist Gerard Mazza.
Ecosocialism 2024 is organised by Green Left, the Socialist Alliance and LINKS International Journal of Socialist Renewal.
