Miami Havana — This documentary looks at the effects of family separation brought about by the hostile attitude of the US to Cuba. SBS, Sunday, June 2, 2.30pm.

Flames of War — While the English revolution of the 1640s was touted by its landowner leaders as a fight for freedom, the interests of the poor farmers and landless people who did most of the fighting were soon forgotten. This program looks at the experiences of ordinary people using their letters, diaries and memoirs. ABC TV, Monday, June 2, 2am.

Movie Matinee: Xime (1994) — Drama about life in a Guinea-Bissau village in the last days of Portuguese rule. SBS, Monday, June 3, 12.30pm.

The Voyage of the St Louis — In May 1939, 918 German Jews, expelled by the Nazi government, set sail on the St Louis for Cuba, only to find their visas invalidated on arrival. The United States and most European countries also refused to offer them asylum. In this documentary, 30 survivors of that fateful voyage talk about their experiences. SBS, Thursday, June 6, 8.30pm.

Maple Street, Maleny — The residents of the town of Maleny, north of Brisbane and the site of the annual folk festival, are a mixture of older people and recent new age arrivals. ABC TV, Thursday, June 6, 9.30pm.

Movie: Battle of the Railways (1946) — Rene Clement's part-documentary, part-drama, winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1946, chronicles the struggle of French railway workers during the Nazi occupation. Filmed at the end of the war with a non-professional cast. SBS, Thursday, June 6, 11.30pm.
