Appeal against nuclear weapons

Appeal against nuclear weapons

In December, the United Nations voted to ask the World Court to give an advisory opinion on whether nuclear weapons are legal or illegal.

This adjudication should happen in September, and the World Court Project, around the world has been urging people to send their own Declaration of Conscience on the issue. Individuals as well as governments can submit to the World Court, and many thousands of these declarations have been sent.

Below is a declaration for readers to send, or to photocopy for others.

However, there is strong pressure, particularly from the nuclear nations, against the World Court ever making its judgment. There is every reason to believe that the minister for foreign affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, will again follow the US line, as he has with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Therefore it is also necessary to write to Gareth Evans to tell him that you want a decision from the World Court on the legality of nuclear weapons. June 20 is the latest date by which Evans can make a submission on this.
