WOLLONGONG War and racism affect us all and students have an important role to play in struggles against injustice, Belinda Selke told Green Left Weekly. Selke is part of the No War No Racism ticket running in the October 22-24 Wollongong University Student Representative Council elections. She is running for SRC president.
The SRC should be democratic, inclusive and accountable. It should involve students in campaigns against governments and corporations that prioritise profits over the environment, democracy, human rights and social justice.
No War No Racism was formed by students who have been involved in the refugee safe-haven campaign. We found that an activist SRC was much needed at this university, Selke added.
The SRC is currently dominated by the Young Liberals and it is a block to student campaigns rather than an aid. We want an SRC that will fight not a Liberal lap-dog, commented Sophie Williams. Williams was the co-ordinator of the safe haven campaign and is contesting vice-president as part of No War No Racism.
No War No Racism is also running for education officer, women's officer, media officer, general representatives and delegate positions for the National Union of Students. The ticket has also decided to campaign for a refugees' rights or anti-racism position to be created on the council next year.
