ADELAIDE — Alice, one of the protesters on trial from the Nurrungar demonstration at Easter, has been fined $125, plus $64 court costs and an additional $750 which are deemed to be "prosecution costs". The rest of the 32 cases have had their hearings deferred.

  • Environmental Youth Alliance is holding its twice yearly state conference on Sunday, September 19 (see page 30 for venue). The opening session will take up the theme "Think globally, act locally", examining the key issues across the plant. The feature panel "Money, mining and Mabo" will look at the relationship between the interests of the corporate mining companies and Aboriginal connection with the land. The remainder of the day will be taken up with workshops discussing campaigns and activities.

  • Both the Tonsley Park and Lonsdale plants of Mitsubishi closed down on September 8 following a rejection by workers at both sites of conditions in the enterprise bargaining deal. The company was not offering the 10-year long service leave entitlement which is already available to white collar employees.

MELBOURNE — Supporters of the Australia-East Timor Association and Fretilin held a picket on September 10 outside the Melbourne office of Ansett, calling on members of the public to boycott Bali. Bali is the headquarters of Indonesia's Udayana military region, which includes occupied East Timor. Military operations in East Timor which have cost the lives of well over 200,000 East Timorese and which involve massacres, disappearances, torture, rape and cultural genocide are being directed from Bali. The picket is a weekly action which usually takes place outside the office of Garuda Indonesia Airlines at 45 Bourke St each Friday from 11 a.m. to 2pm. The venue was changed to Ansett on this occasion because Ansett has begun flying to Bali.
