Abortion picket marks IWD

BRISBANE — "This demonstrates how so-called pro-lifers value only the life of the foetus and devalue the lives of health workers and women", said Mary Barram, spokesperson for the Women's Abortion Campaign.

Barram was commenting on the murder of Dr David Gunn in Florida on March 10. Gunn was shot in the back three times outside his abortion clinic by an anti-abortion demonstrator. The self-proclaimed "pro-lifer" shot Gunn so that the doctor could give his life to Jesus Christ.

Two days earlier, on International Women's Day, the Women's Abortion Campaign held a picket calling for the repeal of Queensland's anti-abortion laws. Twenty-five people gathered on the steps of King George Square and a small but lively contingent marched to the Queen Street Mall to raise the issue against the Goss government's repeated refusal to deal with it.

Democratic Socialist candidate and abortion activist Susan Price said, "The lack of commitment by the Goss government to implement its own party policy means that women still have far to go before we have the right to free, safe abortion on demand".
