Trans Justice Meanjin (TJM) unveiled a giant trans flag on March 31 as part of the Trans Day of Visibility in Magan-djin/Brisbane. The action highlighted the group’s call to reinstate trans youth health care in Queensland.
More than 100 people participated in the action which included a mass unfurling of the flag, stalls and bands.
“Trans and gender diverse people deserve the things we need to live good lives, like access to proper healthcare, secure housing and good jobs,” Jodie Hall from TJM said. “And we deserve the same rights and protections under the law as everyone else.”
“The Queensland government must immediately end its cruel attack on the lives and healthcare of trans youth and reinstate care.”
Hall described the record breaking 20x40m trans flag as a “a powerful symbol of trans love and joy but also trans resistance and defiance”.
“The world’s largest trans flag is a powerful symbol of trans love and joy - but also trans resistance and defiance.”
Project lead Aisling Taylor described the effort to make the flag as a “true community effort”.
“We had more than 30 community members and allies come out and volunteer their time and skills to help sew this flag across 10 days of sewing. Many of us had never sewn before but decided to come and learn so that we could be a part of this project.”
“This flag is twice the size of the next largest trans flag in the U.S. This was only possible due to the volunteers, and community support in fundraising, providing sewing machines and the West End Uniting Church allowing us to sew and store this ginormous flag in their community hall.”
