Why

What can a revolutionary Jewish movement from a century ago teach us about solidarity and political action today?

At the centre of Molly Crabapple’s new book, Here Where We Live is Our Country, is the story of the Jewish Labour Bund from 1897-1945: a mass Jewish socialist movement that fought antisemitism, nationalism, Zionism and authoritarianism and believed that Jewish freedom had to be fought for alongside the freedom of others.

Tickets available from Jewish Council of Australia.

The Bund built unions, schools, cultural institutions and organised workers across Eastern Europe. At its heart was the Yiddish idea of doikayt — “hereness”: that Jews should fight for freedom and dignity where they lived, in solidarity with others.

To dig into this and much more, join us for an evening of politics, music, art and solidarity, bringing Molly Crabapple together with Jewish, Palestinian and other artists, writers and organisers. We’ll explore what solidarity asks of us now, across struggles for Palestinian liberation, workers’ rights and racial justice; in confronting nationalism and the far right; and in building movements and communities capable of fighting for something better.

This event will feature Molly in conversation with Sarah Schwartz, performances by Yiddish choir Vox Canvas, Palestinian poet Sara M. Saleh — and the chance to meet hundreds of others interested in building a politics of solidarity.

Stay tuned for more artist announcements.

Tickets available from Jewish Council of Australia.
