Israel has killed more than 800 athletes in Gaza during the ongoing genocide, including 421 football players. Additionally, they target limbs of players, detain them, or prevent them from travelling and have also destroyed 288 sports facilities in Gaza and the West Bank. FIFA has not suspended or sanctioned the Israeli Football Association, and instead continues to support their arts-washing and sports-washing of genocide, apartheid & occupation.
Compare this to Russia: within days of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national and club teams from competition "until further notice." That ban remains in place today, four years on, locking Russia out of the 2026 World Cup entirely. Yet despite far longer-documented violence against Palestinian athletes, no such consequence has been applied to Israel.
During this film night, we will screen a handful of short films and documentaries about the experiences of Palestinian athletes & teams under occupation, and then follow with drinks and snacks, and a discussion of the films. A ticketing price of $10 is set for this evening to cover refreshments.
Tickets available from Salaamtix.
