Tantura (2022) is a documentary film directed by Alon Schwarz that examines the events surrounding the Palestinian coastal village of Tantura in 1948, the Nakba (catastrophe).
The film follows the investigation of Israeli researcher Teddy Katz, who in the late 1990s collected extensive audio interviews with both Israeli veterans and Palestinian witnesses. His research raised controversial claims that a massacre may have taken place in Tantura after the village’s capture by Zionist forces.
Through contemporary interviews, archival material, and recorded testimonies, the documentary revisits former soldiers from the Alexandroni Brigade alongside surviving witnesses and historians. It explores how memory, denial, and national narrative shape the understanding of 1948, and how difficult historical truths are often contested or suppressed within society.
At its core, Tantura is not only about one village but also about the broader struggle over historical memory, how the events of the Nakba are remembered, denied, or re-examined, and how crimes and injustice continue to shape present-day identities and politics.
