Why
Join us for a barrier breaking conversation with speakers from the Black Peoples Union, Crime Scene Australia, and the Kanak Delegation. Activists, elders, and community members from Kanaky and so called 'Australia' will be all in one room, discussing the big issues in decolonisation.
Hosted in conjunction with Free Kanaky Solidariy Naarm and Law Students For Refugees, this event is your chance to hear from the front lines of decolonisation.
Tickets available from Trybooking.
Speakers
- Grand Chief Sinewami: Grand chief Sinewami Htamumu Hippolyte Wakewi is one of the Kanak chiefs who made a unilateral declaration of sovereignty on 24 September 2024 in Kanaky. As President of Inaat Ne Kanaky, he fights for full sovereignty of Kanak chiefdoms on their own terms.
- Fara Caillard: Francoise Caillard (Fara) is a Kanak woman from the Serei WO clan of the Guahma chiefdom on Nengone island (Maré). Since her time with the Red Scarves (Foulards Rouges) in the 1970s, Fara has relentlessly campaigned for the freedom of her people and women. Fara will continue her work until all women are free from patriarchy and colonialism.
- Doriane Nonmoira: Doriane Nonmoira is a Kanak activist in the decolonial feminist movement. She is a memeber of Smiling Melanesian Village and UFFO NC (.the Union of Francophone Women in the Pacific, New Caledonia). Her struggle is for the self-identification of Indigenous women in face of colonial forces that have made societies move backwards through the control of land and bodies.
- Sonia Togna: Sonia Togna is a militant pro-independence Kanak feminist with over 40 years dedicated to supporting women’s autonomy, health, and safety. She is a founding member of UFFO NC (the Union of Francophone Women in the Pacific, New Caledonia) which fights against all forms of violence against women. Her struggle is against the colonial and neocolonial systems destroying Kanak identities to keep them enslaved.
- Thierry Kameremoin: Thierry Kameremoin has been an activist since 1979. He is currently part of the Urgence Kanaky collective, where he works to support incarcerated and deported Kanak people, and he is also a member of the pro- independence political party Union Caledonienne.
