Why

Recent works by Gaza artist Majed Badra and a selection of historic solidarity posters from the archive.

Plus introducing Socialist Alliance candidate for Lord Mayor of Newcastle and curator of the exhibition Steve O'Brien.

This exhibition contextualises the recent work by the artist with that of over 50 years of Australian solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people. While issues and images tragically keep repeating the solidarity and awareness keeps growing.

Majed Badra is a filmmaker, editor, and visual storyteller with a multidisciplinary background in Illustration, Comics; Narrative Practice, and Creative Writing. His training in sequential art deeply informs his cinematic approach—shaping the way he constructs scenes, designs visual rhythm, and builds emotionally resonant narratives. Before moving into filmmaking, Majed worked extensively across illustration, comics, cartoons, and graphic design, developing a strong visual foundation that now supports his work behind the camera. His documentary Gaza Nippers: Hope Amid Devastation has been screened across universities, cultural institutions, community organisations, and the NSW Parliament House Theatrette, earning recognition from scholars, journalists, and community leaders for its peace-journalism sensibility and human-centred storytelling.

Steve O’Brien, a lifelong peace, trade union and social activist, started collecting posters in the 1980s. He later completed a Master of Fine Arts on image databases at the University of Newcastle on the digitisation of posters as a social and cultural record and the relationship between politics and art. The exhibition will be on show (by appointment) until April 20.
